In the midst of this ever-changing city, Taix French Restaurant is all about tradition. Opened in 1927 (and at its present location in Echo Park since 1962), it's operated by the third and fourth generations of the Taix Family and boasts many veteran staff. Taix became an institution by serving French fare novel to Angelenos with rare charm and at reasonable prices. Raymond Taix (son of the restaurant's founder Marius) and his son Michael have artfully retained its Gallic character, and over recent years added an award-winning wine list too.

Every item on Taix's unpretentious Provencal menu is made from scratch to Chef Dominique Theval's demanding standards. Classics like Moules Maison (mussels cooked with leeks, butter, cream, white wine, and shallots); Cote de Veau (grilled veal chop with shallot sauce); and Creme Brulee are served in generous portions and with unfussy style. The excellent soups change daily, and there's an unusually large vegetarian selection across the menu. After your meal, relax in the throw-back 321 Lounge, where carefully-curated live music and comedy compliment the lounge menu (which is available until 1:00 am Wednesday through Saturday) and comprehensive bar.
